Building Blocks supplied the panelized glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) balcony system for this eighteen story, forty-seven unit condominium project designed by Foster + Partners. This was Miami Beach’s first project within the Faena District.
The challenge was to design a GFRC balcony system so that it captured the graceful double curvature of the Foster design while being both light enough to minimize deflection of the 17 foot cantilevered post tension slab and strong enough to support the glass railing under possible hurricane conditions.
We developed a custom mix for the project to meet the design intent of Foster. It utilized an ultra-white Portland cement with a small amount of quartz to provide just the right amount of sparkle – the perfect Miami mix.
Our GFRC system has been Miami-Dade NOA approved since 2004 when we provided cladding for the Miami Children’s Hospital.
